 Languages Of Pakistan

Pakistan is a multi-lingual country. About thirty-one distinct languages are spoken in Pakistan, not counting a number of dialects, but no single language is commonly spoken or understood in all parts of the country. Many of the languages are spoken by a relatively small proportion of the population and some are not even commonly written, but sentiment and association among the speakers is almost invariably opposed to absorption into one of the larger units. With minor exceptions all the languages are also spoken outside the country.

Among the various languages and dialects spoken are: Balochi, Brahavi and Jugdal (also Makrani) in Balochistan; Pushto and Hindko in the NWFP with local dialects of Chitral, Gilgit and Hunza; Punjabi, Potwari and Saraiki in the Punjab; Sindhi, Saraiki and Urdu in Sindh; Gujri and Kashmiri in Azad Kashmir.

Majority of the languages spoken in Pakistan are of Indo-Aryan origin while the Brahavi belongs to the Dravidian family of languages. Most of the languages have Common vocabulary with Arabic, Persian and Turkish and are written in Persia Scripts from right to left. They have certain grammatical affinities which make it easier for the people of one region to learn the language of the other.
